The Gummy Bear osmosis experiment for kids is an excellent demonstration of osmosis. how water moves from higher concentration to lower concentration through a selectively permeable membrane.
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration.
The important thing to remember is that osmosis is the movement of WATER MOLECULES not the particles dissolved in the water.
Gummy Bears are bright and sugar-filled tasty candy, and they are not only delicious to
eat but super fun for both kids and adults. A Gummy Bear is made of gelatin, water, and a sweetener like sugar or corn syrup. It starts as a liquid and then further cools down into an easy to chew solution. The chewiness of the gummy bear is majorly due to gelatin content.
The gummy bear osmosis experiment is unique in its sense. You will observe most of the sugar candies dissolve in water, but gummy bears are an exception. They do not get dissolved in water and are thus the perfect pick for this experiment.
The reason gummy bears don''t dissolve in water is because of their gelatin content. When you make gummy bears, both water and gelatin are mixed and heated together. When it cools down, water starts to leave the candy. The candy then hardens and gets a bright texture and look.
The Gummy bear osmosis experiment is perfect for teaching children about this concept. It''s easy to set up, takes only a few minutes, and requires very little equipment.
It takes at least one hour to arrange all the material required to set up an experiment to demonstrate osmosis. The gummy bear experiment takes more than 48 hours.
Step 1: Fill every glass with sugar water, water and saltwater.
Step 2: Label each of them.
Step 3: Fill the saltwater glass with half a cup of water. Mix salt (1 tbsp) in it and make sure that salt completely dissolves in the glass.
Step 4: Similarly, do with sugar water and ensure that the sugar thoroughly mixes with water.
Step 5: Do the same with baking soda glass as well.
Step 6: Choose three gummy bears for each of the glasses.
Step 7: Measure their height, width, and weight and write down the time of measurement.
Step 8: Now, immerse each gummy bear into their respective glasses.
Step 9: Wait for a minimum of half a day, i.e., 12 hours.
Step 10: Separate the gummy bear post 12 hours and make the exact measurements and note them.
Step 11: Immerse the gummy bears again in their respective solution.
Step 12: Post 24 hours, repeat the exact measurements and then immerse the gummy bears again.
Step 13: Again, repeat the same process post two days, i.e., 48 hours.
As per the final result, you can see that all three gummy bears have expanded in size. Slight expansion is witnessed just after 12 hours only. And it continues with each measurement.
The gummy bears swell in size due to osmosis. Water flows down from the glass to the gummy bears, and thus it expands in size.
Now, let''s understand the reason behind the results of the gummy bear osmosis experiment for kids. The gummy bears have a surface area that allows some particles to pass through, whereas others can''t. It has small gaps so that charged and minute matters like water can enter, but any other large particles cannot enter. This is the semi-permeable membrane required for osmosis.
When you immerse a gummy bear in water, the water acts as a solute. At the same time, the water molecules act as a solvent. This is when the osmosis begins. We know osmosis occurs when water flows from a high concentration to a low concentration. The gummy bear has zero water content, and thus when you put it into the water, the water flows into the gummy bear through the osmosis process.
When the osmosis experiment starts, the gummy bear has more gelatin and less water content, and thus, it is highly chewy. But as the experiment progresses, the gummy bear gains more water, making it softer and softer like a sponge. After a while, it dissolves in water.
Now you know why when you buy a bag of gummy bears in a store, they are small and hard like rocks, yet when left overnight in a cup with some water, they soak up all the water and grow into big plump bears!
Overall, the gummy bear osmosis experiment is such fun yet simple! Experiments like gummy bear osmosis are the best way to make your kids understand scientific concepts that appear dull to them.
