Being a parent is not easy. From keeping your child safe to getting them to eat their vegetables, there''s always something new and different that you''re trying to figure out. Just when you think you''ve got it all figured out, they change again! However, one thing that never changes for parents is the desire to see their children grow up and be successful in life. And one way of doing this is fostering your child''s learning through playtime. This means encouraging them to learn new skills on their own, guiding them through difficult times with empathy and understanding, and helping them feel confident about who they are becoming as people. These skills will serve any child for the rest of their lives! Within the first few years of their lives, children learn more than they will in any other stage of development. They are constantly absorbing information, and by age 3, children have already learned 20% of what they know. With this knowledge, parents can help foster their child''s learning.
The benefits of preschool are vast. In the short term, children who attend preschool are more likely to be ready for kindergarten than those who don''t. Preschool students also score better on standardized tests and have higher self-esteem. The long-term impacts can last a lifetime:
Learning is essential. As children grow, their brains develop and learn at different rates depending on the child. It''s critical to nurture this growth by providing educational opportunities to help them succeed in school and life. Everyone knows that preschool is the best time to start encouraging a love of learning. But how does one go about it? We''ll explore five ways to foster your child''s preschool learning!
1. Make reading a part of their daily routine.
Reading time should be enjoyable for both you and your preschooler, so share books that interest you as well as ones they might not be interested in yet. Reading should be fun for everyone! This means reading with your child every day and having books around the house where they can easily access them on their own.
2. Celebrate the accomplishment of small milestones
Celebrate every milestone; don''t just wait for success before buying an accomplishment. Find something new or unique about each day/week/month as it passes by and celebrate accordingly. Acknowledge successes and acknowledge where there is room for improvement (and use those opportunities for other celebrations). Little achievements like getting dressed by themselves or using a fork properly should be acknowledged as successes, so your child knows how proud you are of them.
3. Encourage curiosity about everything in life.
Through hands-on activities and conversation time with adults and children alike, you can encourage curiosity in children. Your little one will learn a lot from playing alongside other kids while asking lots of questions and observing their surroundings. Curiosity can be sparked by anything from an unfamiliar object to a new idea. Curiosity is the key to learning, discovery, innovation, and more. Building curiosity in preschoolers will help them develop their learning capacity and eagerly take on new challenges later in life.
4. Read stories together
Reading time should be enjoyable for both you and your preschooler, so share books that interest you as well as ones they might not be interested in yet. Reading should be fun for everyone! Reading stories is a great way to bond with your child. Reading together helps develop language skills and strengthens family bonds, and teaches kids about the world around them.
5. Give your child space to explore
Allow them time outside on their own and without toys or TV as they will have more opportunities to think creatively about what they see around them. Plenty of social interactions with other children can help them develop empathy skills. At the same time, preschoolers can learn a lot from interacting with adults too, so take them on regular visits to the park and let your preschooler help you out in the kitchen.
The preschool years are all about learning new things and developing skills that will be useful when they get older, but some preschool activities have more significance than others. With the right approach, it''s possible to foster your child''s learning in a way that strengthens their natural abilities and interests. Make sure you provide them with plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery and time to play freely on their own. It would be best to work hard to make reading fun by talking about what they see or doing related activities together like making up stories or playing word games. These are just some ways parents can help children learn from an early age, so give each one a try!
